Chairs

I sit in a chair I paid $1.7k for.

You don’t need to spend that much, but you’re working 12-16 hours 5-7 days a week. Whatever you buy, you will spend more than 50% of each day, week, and month sitting in. It’s not something you should cheap out on.

There are two brands I recommend, Herman Miller and Steelcase.

Steelcase has the lowest and highest ends, while Miller does better in the mid range.

Steelcase has three offerings worth talking about. All come with a 10 year warranty (which I’ve used.)

The cheapest pick is the Series 1. It has arm, back, and seat depth adjustments. The back adjusts automatically, which can be a bit finicky but otherwise it’s an amazing chair.

The Think chair has better adjustments all around than the series 1. The adjustments all have much greater range, which gives you more options to be comfortable in.

The Gesture, is what I have. You can get it cheaper if you exclude the headrest, just keep in mind you can’t add it later. The arms on this thing are the most adjustable arms of any chair on the planet. You’ll need to watch a video, but you’ll always be able to put these arms exactly where you want them.

Herman Miller has one chair that fits between the Series 1 and Think chair; the Aeron.

It’s better than the Series 1, and most people prefer it over the Think. It’s more expensive than the Series 1, but cheaper than the Think.

The Aeron has less arm adjustment than the Think, but feels better on the back.

Herman offers a 10-year warranty on all chairs like Steelcase, so you can’t go wrong there with either.

Because these chairs are so pricey, I recommend getting an adjustable desk first. It’s much cheaper, and you can make a bad chair last a lot longer when you don’t have to sit in it.

I don’t recommend getting a cheap chair, since you already have the office chairs. Use them until you want and can afford a great chair.
